Wenlock Olympian Society

The Wenlock Olympian Games were founded by Dr William Penny Brookes, who is recognised as the inspiration for the modern International Olympic Games.

The Games have been held almost every year in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, since 1850, attracting athletes from all across the UK. The first Games included a mixture of athletics and traditional sports such as football and cricket, as well as fun events like wheelbarrow races!

Now, the sports reflect those of the Olympics, with events like athletics, archery, tennis and volleyball, as well as some lesser-known sports like clay-pigeon shooting and fencing.

Wenlock is also the inspiration behind the London 2012 mascot of the same name.

Why we sponsor it?

Wenlock Olympian games

At Keycamp, we’re all about having free-range fun in the great outdoors, and we recognise the importance of staying active. That’s why we’ve decided to sponsor the Wenlock Olympian Games for four years.

Our parcs have loads of activities to get involved with, from canoeing and cycle hire, to football and horse riding, so there’s no excuse not to get active on your Keycamp family holiday.

We’ll be running our own version of the Olympics at our kids’ clubs parcs throughout the season. Take a look at the activity program and which parcs will feature “Fun Olympics” here.

The 126th Wenlock Olympian Games will take place in Much Wenlock and other sites across Shropshire on 8, 9, 13, 14 & 15 July 2012.
